Who
Needs To Take Special Precautions?
Some
people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-comprised persons such
as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy,
persons who have undergone organ transplants,
people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infection.
These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means
to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbiological contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking
Water Hotline. Please call (1-800-426-4791).
Source Water Area Protection (SWAP)
Ohio
EPA has recently completed a study of Adams County Regional Water’s source of drinking water to identify potential contaminant
sources and provide guidance on protecting the drinking water source. According to this study, the aquifer (water rich zone)
that supplies water to Adams County Regional Water has a high susceptibility to contamination. This determination is based
on the following:

Lack of a protective layer of clay overlying the aquifer.
·
Shallow depth of the aquifer.
·
Presence of significant potential contaminant sources in the area
This susceptibility means
that under current existing conditions, the likelihood of the aquifer becoming contaminated is relatively high. This likelihood
can be minimized by implementing appropriate protective measures.
Some measures that can
be utilized are as follows:
·
Check your septic system and make sure it is always working properly.
·
Dispose of all oil and petroleum products the proper way.
·
Keep all junk piles cleaned up as runoff from these can contaminate the
source water.
·
Maintain vehicles so leaks will not contaminate the source water.
·
Report to the Water District anything that looks questionable.
ACRWD has been able to acquire
the property adjacent to the plant and well field as Mr. Malcolm Cox is retiring. This property
contains approximately 130 acres and will help to keep contamination from future septic systems and other contaminants away from the well field. It is our job to assure that clean drinking water will be available for many generations to come. We feel that
this acquisition will help this assurance be a reality as well as give us plenty of room for
growth when that need arises.

New Billing Software….
ACRWD will be installing new billing software
sometime in 2008. This new software will give us several new capabilities should they be cost effective. One of the new capabilities
will be the ability to accept credit and debit cards in the office, as well as via the internet in the future. It will also
give us the capability to keep all records pertaining to each account in an electronic version attached to the account. The
present system has been in use since 1986. We feel it is time to upgrade.
Call Before You Dig……..
We like to remind people that ACRWD is a member of Ohio Utility Protection Service (OUPS). This service is provided
so property owners or contractors doing projects will have the opportunity to have utility lines marked in the excavation
area. Before you dig, you should call OUPS at 800-362-2764. Please have your street address, township, and nearest intersecting
road information ready for the operator. ACRWD will mark our lines only after we receive a ticket from OUPS. This is law as
specified in Ohio Revised Code, Section 3781.25 to 3781.32 and we may charge
for damages occurred when a spot notification has not been received.
This service has been designed for your protection as well as the utilities it serves. There could be a gas
line or even an electric line where you may be digging. The life you save may be your own.
